HOUSE OF LEAVES
Location: Forest near Rouen, France
Design: Jason Slabbynck
The forest is a place where space and time is very visible. The atmosphere and play of light vary from season to season, even from day to day. It’s a place that always looks new but familiar at the same time. I want to capture a moment of this space and time in a single installation. Making a ‘primitive hut’ out of translucent marble-like panels filled with leaves collected from the forest. This installation will create the marvelous atmosphere of walking under a cover of leaves on a sunny day, but the effect will vary depending on the weather.
Recreating the marvelous atmospheres from nature. Reminding visitors to look around with all their senses. Capturing their attention and interest with something that looks familiar, a house shape, but is not graspable with one look, translucent effect of marble-like panels filled with leaves. Creating a place to contemplate on the role of nature and the human interventions shaping this nature, in a good and a bad way.
