BOLOGNA CULTURE CENTER
Space for culture, art and public relationships
Design: Jason Slabbynck in collaboration with Mathias Thomson
Contemporary culture and ‘creativity’ are often the catalysts for (re)development. This attractive factory building in Quatro Inferiore, just outside of Bologna, has all the potential to become a cultural catalyst for the city and its region. To explore its full potential this new Bologna Culture Center, needs to become visible as well as vivacious: a destination and an event. All year around lending space to multiple functions and activities for a wide audience. This is what we imagine a cultural catalyst doing. Bologna has always been a rich intellectual city, founding the first university in Europe, with academic freedom as a standard. We propose that culture center as a cultural catalyst becomes a continuation of the same logic as a university – where a number of people through association become one body, society or community. The same pattern that occurs in this designs programmatic mixing, as different functions and activities are associated into one body, envelope or framework. Hereby a variety of spaces and identities are created, ranging from the intimate to the monumental.
